Amazon
Amazon.com opened on the World Wide Web in 1995 and Amazon.co.uk launched in 1998. Amazon has invested more than £4.6 billion in the UK economy to build and run its UK business since 2010. Across the UK, Amazon has more than 24,000 permanent employees at its UK Head Office in London; Development Centres in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London; its Customer Service Centre in Edinburgh; 16 fulfilment centres across England, Scotland and Wales; our sort centres, delivery stations and transportation services; the Fashion Photography Studio in Shoreditch, and to run the Amazon Web Services (AWS) UK Data Centre Region.
At Amazon, we recognize that the jobs of tomorrow require a stronger aptitude for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). That’s why we support STEM education programs to better prepare students for future in-demand jobs.
Each year during UK British Science Week we support a secondary school close to each of our fulfilment centres and corporate offices with a £1,000 donation. This donation is for equipment or experiences which will spark an interest in STEM with pupils and encourage them to consider a STEM-based field in their future career.
At a number of our fulfilment centres we also provide tours, showcasing our technology and providing young people with the opportunity to meet and learn from the engineers, IT specialists and apprentices who manage our buildings. We have worked with social enterprise MyKindofFuture since 2016 inviting students from local schools to experience Amazon whilst also taking part in STEM workshops in order to develop their skills and aspirations for future study and careers.
Support for STEM programmes and in particular those focused on girls, is also a key aspect of our Amazon in the Community programme where through regular monthly donations from our 16 fulfilment centres we frequently support schools and STEM clubs to deliver their initiatives.
We hope our support of STEM programmes creates greater accessibility and exposure for young people to STEM education. Technology and innovation fuel our business and so we are proud to help prepare our next generation of inventors. For more information, visit: www.amazon.jobs/apprentices.

Royal Academy of Engineering
As the UK’s national academy for engineering, we bring together the most successful and talented engineers for a shared purpose: to advance and promote excellence in engineering. We have four strategic challenges: make the UK the leading nation for engineering innovation; address the engineering skills crisis; position engineering at the heart of society; and lead the profession.
For the past six years we have been delivering a programme to increase diversity and inclusion across the engineering profession. At the heart of the programme is an ambition to not only increase the representation of women, ethnic minority groups, younger and older people, disabled people, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people; but also to create more inclusive cultures where all engineers thrive.
Vision: an inclusive engineering profession that inspires attracts and retains people from diverse backgrounds and reflects UK society.
Mission: lead the engineering profession to challenge the status quo, stimulate cultural change and improve diversity and inclusion.
Strategic aims: provide insight to remove barriers to diversity and inclusion; engage in partnerships to remove barriers to diversity and inclusion; and deliver impact through communications
We work collaboratively with around 60 engineering employers and all 35 professional engineering institutions to facilitate a joined-up collaborative approach to making progress. To find out more about our programme, please email diversityteam@raeng.org.uk

Royal Navy
On an average day, the Royal Navy has up to 8,000 sailors and Royal Marines, plus 40 ships, submarines or aircraft either deployed or about to deploy on operations around the world. None of this would be possible without the Royal Navy’s diverse team of engineers, who make up one third of its trained strength of 30,000 people. Engineers in the Royal Navy have the skills to operate, maintain, diagnose and repair equipment from weapons to radar, helicopters and engines, while at sea or on land across the globe. During peacetime and war, Royal Navy engineers are expected to improvise, adapt and overcome the most adverse situations. They provide warships, submarines and aircraft with the capability to fulfil the demands placed upon the Royal Navy in order to keep Britain safe and prosperous. As a result, the Royal Navy is able to deploy around the world to areas of crisis, providing everything from warfighting to the delivery of humanitarian aid and disaster relief. The Royal Navy also contributes to the success of Britain’s economy, securing the seas and protecting shipping lanes vital to our country’s prosperity. For more information about engineering in the Royal Navy, visit: www.royalnavy.mod.uk/engineers.
