Unsung Heroes of STEM

This event is open to the public.
For International Women in Engineering Day, Abertay will be celebrating and highlighting the Unsung Heroes of STEM (from all STEM areas). I hope you can join us for an afternoon of talks, and for our poster exhibition and awards ceremony. For more information or to book you place, Click Here.
The Unsung Heroes of STEM poster competition is open to all. Design an A1 size poster describing a little-known STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths) discoverer or discovery. Email your poster in PDF format to Alex at 1304133@abertay.ac.uk Entries are open until midnight 12 June 2017. All posters submitted to the competition will be exhibited in the foyer at Abertay University in Dundee for the week prior to the event, and then in the Hannah Maclure Centre (HMC) at Abertay
on 23rd June, the winner will be announced on June 23rd in the HMC.
We are also hosting a free CPD workshop at Abertay, hosted by Equate Scotland. The topic is unconscious bias, the CPD event is free and open to all, but booking is required because places are limited. People can register for the workshop here.

Gorillaz App Challenge

On 19 June the Gorillaz App was launched and it hosts a new Jaguar Land Rover recruitment area as a 360 environment in the Gorillaz House garage, featuring all the iconic vehicles from Gorillaz past.
The challenge is in two parts. The first is designed to educate users about the benefits of electric vehicles, as they assemble Jaguar's first all-electric five-seater sports car, the Jaguar I-PACE Concept. The second and more demanding will focus on cracking code – there are more than 4,000 combinations – as well as cipher in an alternate reality.

Taking place on International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) on the 23 June, Women in Computer Science will address how knowledge of computing plays a major role in our future, how studying computing may empower young people, and how the pressing issues the gender gap presents to society needs to be tackled.
Chaired by Saadia Zahidi, Head of Education, Gender and Work of World Economic Forum and hosted by Maja Pantic, Professor of Affective and Behavioural Computing at Imperial College, London, the event will involve 5-6 inspirational women computer scientists and engineers to encourage and inspire our future leaders and pioneers in this area. Each participant will give a 10-minute talk on their field of study and work, what makes them tick as the experts, and their personal story on how they decided to choose computer science as their profession.

The Telegraph, in partnership with the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), and sponsors Scottish Power, Bechtel and BAE Systems have been seeking nominations for the Top 50 Women in Engineering under 35 (WE50), to be announced on International Women in Engineering Day in a supplement to the Telegraph national newspaper. There were well over 500 nominations and the quality was very high making it difficult for the judges to choose the Top 50 list.

15 school girls (13 – 14yrs) and their teachers will be coming into Amey’s Eurocentral office. There will be short presentations delivered by our own female engineers about their work. There will also be a K’nnex challenge - we’ll be asking the girls to build a bridge and we will show the girls round our TRISS (Trunk Road Incident Support Service) van. At the end there will be lunch with the engineers.

Building Bridges: Routes into Engineering

Scotland TranServ is a joint venture partnership between Balfour Beatty and Mouchel Consulting. We manage and maintain the trunk road and motorway network from Loch Lomond down to Stranraer, which entails 636km and 1800 structures.
We will be inviting 40 teenage girls (14-15yrs) and their teachers into our Glasgow office to meet female Civil Engineering undergraduates from our local universities, our own Graduate Trainees and our most senior female engineers. The event will comprise a series of short 20 minute presentations and practical, team building engineering task. We’ll break for lunch, have a couple more presentations from our JV partners and then have a short Q&A session at the end.
The event will also involve Glasgow Caledonian University, University of West of Scotland, Glasgow University and Strathclyde University.

Working alongside the Stemettes organisation, Centrica will be welcoming girls from three Aberdeen schools into its offices to find out more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers. Throughout the day, the pupils will meet engineers and female leaders from across Centrica’s Exploration & Production business, as well as take part in activities and experiments to give them a hands-on experience of the oil and gas industry and the opportunities in the sector.
Centrica’s Energy Network is a volunteer-led organisation within the FTSE100 company’s Exploration & Production business. The Energy Network’s aim is to help create a diverse and inclusive business through education, inspiration and development opportunities.

Engineering Water Challenge with South Milford Guides

The Guides will role-play disaster relief civil engineers, providing essential aid to a small community which has been virtually destroyed by a hurricane. They will plan and build an emergency water supply system from gutter, dowels and elastic bands for the people the community.

INPUT Bridges and People Like Me. Using only sheets of paper, a bit of masking tape and some nuts and bolts, students will be shown how to roll paper into tubes and from these construct a beam bridge that can support up many times its own weight, depending on how well it has been constructed!

In the autumn of 2016, the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund awarded a grant to Inspired Youth to deliver a programme aimed at motivating girls in North Norfolk to consider a career in engineering or energy. To further this initiative, Inspired Youth is hosting a conference at The Mo in Sheringham, the home of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm Visitor Centre, in celebration of this year's ‘International Women in Engineering Day'.
The conference is a new element of a programme aimed at inspiring young females in five North Norfolk secondary schools to consider studying the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics - subjects that many girls have often resisted in the past - and which can provide the stepping-stones to careers in both engineering and energy. The first international finals of the FIRST® LEGO® League International Open Championship 2017 sponsored by Bechtel are taking place 21-24 June in Bath, UK. Over 700 children aged 9-16 representing 36 countries worldwide will battle it out in this global robotics competition, which is designed to encourage schoolchildren to take up careers in engineering and technology. As the tournament coincides with International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June, it is worth noting over one third of the young competitors are female (37%, compared with just 9% of UK engineers).
The four-day STEM challenge will include the European premiere of the 3D film, ‘Dream Big, Engineering Our World’ sponsored by Bechtel, which narrates some of the most extraordinary engineering feats around the globe.

It is a training course focusing on career development for women from the RACHP industry and will offer delegates the opportunity to have hands on practical experience of working with refrigeration equipment as well as taking part in an interactive afternoon session focusing on personal and career development. The morning session Refrigeration Appreciation is a practical session will enable non-technical people to gain a better understanding of how a refrigeration system works. Delegates will look closely at a system and gain hands on experience. In the afternoon during an interactive session delegates will have the opportunity to spend time reflecting upon their career and drafting a plan to help achieve their career goals.

On 19 June the Gorillaz App was launched and it hosts a new Jaguar Land Rover recruitment area as a 360 environment in the Gorillaz House garage, featuring all the iconic vehicles from Gorillaz past.
The challenge is in two parts. The first is designed to educate users about the benefits of electric vehicles, as they assemble Jaguar's first all-electric five-seater sports car, the Jaguar I-PACE Concept. The second and more demanding will focus on cracking code – there are more than 4,000 combinations – as well as cipher in an alternate reality.

Scotland TranServ is a joint venture partnership between Balfour Beatty and Mouchel Consulting. We manage and maintain the trunk road and motorway network from Loch Lomond down to Stranraer, which entails 636km and 1800 structures.
We will be inviting 40 teenage girls (14-15yrs) and their teachers into our Glasgow office to meet female Civil Engineering undergraduates from our local universities, our own Graduate Trainees and our most senior female engineers. The event will comprise a series of short 20 minute presentations and practical, team building engineering task. We’ll break for lunch, have a couple more presentations from our JV partners and then have a short Q&A session at the end.

The aim of the day is to raise their awareness of options within Engineering during a fun and interactive session.
The day will include a presentation about higher education, talks from female guest speakers from local engineering organisations, a guided tour around the campus and an engineering team challenge! CU Coventry is actively working to develop the awareness and opportunities for pupils in local schools in Coventry and we are aiming this session at Year 8 girls as we believe reaching out to girls from an early age enables them to make better and informed decisions about their career ambitions when they are older.

On the 23rd of June, Ford is welcoming 80 female pupils from schools in the local Essex area to participate in a day of activities geared to help inspire more young women to consider engineering as a career.
The event, part of Ford’s ongoing commitment to encourage more young people to pursue STEM studies, will include key note speeches from senior Ford engineers; Steve Gill, Director of Powertrain Engineering and Josephine Payne, Engine Production Manager, opportunity to participate in a Q&A panel discussion with female engineers, who are at the start of their careers, and Laura Thurgood, winner of the inaugural Ford STEM prize.

In the autumn of 2016, the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund awarded a grant to Inspired Youth to deliver a programme aimed at motivating girls in North Norfolk to consider a career in engineering or energy. To further this initiative, Inspired Youth is hosting a conference at The Mo in Sheringham, the home of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm Visitor Centre, in celebration of this year's ‘International Women in Engineering Day'.
The conference is a new element of a programme aimed at inspiring young females in five North Norfolk secondary schools to consider studying the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics - subjects that many girls have often resisted in the past - and which can provide the stepping-stones to careers in both engineering and energy. It is anticipated that the conference will be attended by around 50 girls and their teachers.

The first international finals of the FIRST® LEGO® League International Open Championship 2017 sponsored by Bechtel are taking place 21-24 June in Bath, UK. Over 700 children aged 9-16 representing 36 countries worldwide will battle it out in this global robotics competition, which is designed to encourage schoolchildren to take up careers in engineering and technology. As the tournament coincides with International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June, it is worth noting over one third of the young competitors are female (37%, compared with just 9% of UK engineers).
The four-day STEM challenge will include the European premiere of the 3D film, ‘Dream Big, Engineering Our World’ sponsored by Bechtel, which narrates some of the most extraordinary engineering feats around the globe.

O2 are proudly supporting International Women in Engineering Day, a day to excite, inspire, and celebrate women in the industry.
Through our Think Big programme we’ve invited over 30 secondary school students to visit our head office in Slough to host a morning of activity to give them a flavour of what a career in technology really means.
We'll be introducing them to the world of networks with the aim of giving them an insight into the real-life design solutions for customers of O2. The students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they’ve learned and design a network based on various different scenarios including IP, LAN, Cloud and Wi-Fi.
O2 are actively engaged in improving diversity and see it as an important part of success and we’re therefore delighted to be supporting INWED for the 4th year running!

The Rochester Bridge Trust have arranged a private screening of 'Hidden Figures', the story of a team of African-American women mathematicians/engineers who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program.
The event is on 23rd June 2017, 4.00pm arrivals for a 4.30pm screening. Representatives from secondary schools and colleges from Kent, Medway and Old Kent - Bexley and Bromley can book up to 5 teachers, sixth formers or aspiring engineers in year 11 from each school / college.
