Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some questions (and answers) that are frequently asked. If you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to contact us: inwed@wes.org.uk
What is International Women in Engineering Day (INWED)?
INWED is an annual festival developed and coordinated by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate the achievements of women in engineering and inspire younger generations. Set up in 2014 as a UK-wide event, INWED went global in 2017.
It takes place annually on 23 June. It is an accessible and inspiring way for companies, institutions, organisations, schools, universities and individuals to raise the profile of women in STEM and related sectors, showcase a commitment to diversity and inspire future generations by organising their own events and activities, under the INWED campaign banner.
How can I follow/keep up to date with INWED on social media?
Follow us on Twitter: @INWED1919
Join the conversation by using: #INWED18 and #RaisingTheBar
Regular news and updates about the campaign, sponsors and events taking place for INWED will be posted via our Twitter account and using the INWED hashtags.
In April we will also be launching our Thunderclap campaign on Twitter to further the awareness of #INWED18 and also to try and get to the number 1 trending spot. In 2017 we reached over 1.2 million people on social media, reaching the number 2 spot, and only being beaten by the hashtag #bringyourdogtoworkday.
How can I find out about events in my area?
All events registered with us via our Event Notification Form will be posted on our 2018 events page and marked on our interactive map so that you can see what is going on in your area.
You may also find WES regional activity in your area organised through a network of Clusters run by WES members throughout the UK with the aim to re-invigorate the regions of the UK, increase the number of women engineers we can reach and support, encourage girls into engineering, help Engineering Companies improve their diversity agenda, and generally increase our strength and influence at a local level. The contact details of our cluster co-ordinators can be found here.
Is the event only celebrated on 23 June?
When should I hold my event?
The Official International Women in Engineering Day is on 23 June. However, events can and do take place in the weeks before and after this date annually.
In 2018, INWED falls on a Saturday, so if you can hold an event open to the public on Saturday 23 June, this could be a great way to include the wider public who may normally be at work or in school. We are also asking all participants to not only share their activities when they are actively doing something for INWED but also to schedule activity for Saturday 23 June through social media sharing platforms such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck, using @INWED1919 #INWED18 and #RaisingTheBar.
How do I register my event with you?
To register your event with us, please complete the Event Notification Form. We will then use this information to post your event on our 2018 events page and mark it on our interactive map.
What type of event/activity should I hold for INWED?
To celebrate INWED you are invited to hold activities and events of your choice. Any means of raising the profile of women engineers and engineering as a career to girls is a great idea!
Events in previous years have ranged from webinars and careers fairs to Lego challenges and private screenings of the film ‘Hidden Figures’. There have also been tours of local factories/engineering plants, to stalls at local museums and conferences and networking events by professional bodies and companies worldwide. For more ideas, take a look at the 2018 events page and 2017 events page.
Why sponsor INWED?
The success of INWED is only made possible by our generous sponsors. With your help, we can continue to coordinate INWED to increase reach and impact every year, developing new and more innovative ways to reach out to a wider audience including more young women across the UK, allowing us to change the face of engineering. Information about the benefits of sponsoring INWED are detailed on our sponsorship page.
