Author of The Chemical Detective - Fiona Erskine
Transform the Future
In 2019, forty years after starting my career in Chemical Engineering, my first thriller was published.
In The Chemical Detective, Dr Jaqueline Silver blows things up to keep people safe. Working in avalanche control, she stumbles across a something fishy in a consignment of explosives but is disbelieved, suspended, threatened and imprisoned. Escaping to follow a chemical trail across Eastern Europe, pursued by assassins, she uncovers a chemical weapons factory in the Chernobyl exclusion zone and brings the criminals to justice. Why would a full-time professional engineer moonlight as a writer? |
Well, I love a good thriller, but I got tired of the portrayal of women as victims or sexy lamps (a refinement of the Bechdel-Wallace test – check if the female character can be replaced by a sexy lamp without affecting the plot). Where was the female Bond, Bourne, McGuyver, Reacher? Why weren’t women in fiction shown solving mysteries, saving the world and transforming the future as they do in real life? I decided to write the stories I wanted to read.
International Women in Engineering Day is a great day to remember that real life is rarely binary: Male or Female. Arts or Science; Career or Family; Having it All or Losing it All.
Real life is a continuum, most choices are about balance, and no one is better at optimising multiple conflicting demands than a professional engineer.
Lean in and have fun.
The Chemical Detective by Fiona Erskine is out now from Point Blank, the crime imprint of Oneworld, hardback.
